Before few days ago, I started reading a book named Corporate Chanakya by Radhakrishnan Pilai. To be true, still I did not able to complete this book because you need to follow the guide that a book tells you. Without following it, reading any book is wasting your time only. This is the main thing, I learned from this book.
Today, I am going to share the Seven Pillars of Business you need to build for your empire from this book. A strong foundation is the key to any successful business. Your vision, your commitment, your purpose, all these from the all important pillar of an organization, the most essential part of any building.
In his ground breaking Arthashastra, Chanakya lists the seven pillars of an organization.
“The King, the minister, the country, the fortified city, the treasury, the army, and the ally are the constituent elements of the state”
Let’s discuss in deep
The King (The Leader)
All great organizations have great leaders. The leader is the visionary, the captain, the man who guide the organization. In today’s corporate world we call him the Chairman, Director, CEO, etc. Without him the organization will lose direction.

So first of all you need a leader for your organization that can take decisions, guide organization and help you in running your organization smoothly.
The Minister (The Manager)
The second most important pillar of your organization is the minister (The Manager). The Manager is the person runs the show. He is also the person you can depend upon in the absence of the leader. He is the man who is always in action. An extraordinary leader and an efficient manager together bring into existence a remarkable organization.
The Country (The Market/Client/Customer)
No business can exist without its market capitalization, its clients, and customers. The market is the area of your operation. The place from where you get your revenue and cash flow. You dominate this territory and would like to maintain your monopoly over this segment.
So you can assume that how much important is this pillar. You need to take care of this pillar by satisfying your customer. Without your customer satisfaction you can’t assume the growth of your business.
The Fortified City (Head Office)
You need a control tower, a place where all plans and strategies are made. It’s from here that your central administrative work is carried out. It’s the nucleus and the center of any organization.
You can assume that how much important is the head office. Without any head office, how you can make a control over your organization. It is the only place where all the higher level of each branch can meet and make plan and strategies to run an organization smoothly.
The Treasury (Finance)
Finance is an extremely important resource. It is the backbone of any business. A strong and well managed treasury is at the heart of any organization. You treasury is also your financial hub.
You need to manage it very carefully. Without treasury, you can’t go ahead.
The Army (The Team)
When we go to war, we need a well equipped and trained army. The army consists of you team members. Those who are ready to fight for the organization. The salesman, the accountant, the driver, the peon-all of them add to your team.
Without an army you can’t even think for victory. No one can run a successful business. You need a well trained and minded team if you want to grow your business.
The Ally (Friends / Consultants)
In life you should have a friend who is just like you. Being in the same boat, he can identify with you and stay close if you need help. He is the one you can depend upon when problems arise. After all, a friend I need is a friend indeed.
Final Words
Look at these seven pillars. Only when these are built into firm and strong sections can the organization shoulder any responsibility and face all challenges. And while building them, do not forget to imbibe that vital ingredient called “Values”.
“Values are the roots from which an organization continuously get in supply as well as grounding – build on them” __ Jim Collins.
